Indications/Uses
Monotherapy for partial onset seizure w/ or w/o secondary generalisation in adults & adolescents ≥16 yr w/ newly diagnosed epilepsy. Add-on to other antiepileptic medicines for partial onset seizures w/ or w/o generalisation in adults, adolescents, childn & infants ≥1 mth of age; myoclonic seizures in adults & adolescents ≥12 yr w/ juvenile myoclonic epilepsy; primary generalised tonic-clonic seizures in adults & adolescents ≥12 yr w/ idiopathic generalised epilepsy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Monotherapy Adult & adolescent ≥16 yr 5-15 mL (500-1,500 mg) bd. Add-on therapy Adult & adolescent 12-17 yr 5-15 mL (500-1,500 mg) bd. Childn ≥6 mth 0.1-0.3 mL/kg bd. Infant 1 to <6 mth 0.07-0.21 mL/kg bd.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be diluted in a glass of water or baby's bottle.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or to pyrrolidone derivatives.
Special Precautions
Growth retardation or unexpected puberty development in childn; symptoms of depression &/or suicidal ideation; family or medical history of irregular heart rhythm; disease &/or treatment that makes patient prone to heart irregularities or salt imbalances; worsened or increased frequency of seizures during the 1st mth of therapy or w/ dose increase. May impair ability to drive or operate any tools or machinery. Contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate; propylene glycol. Patients w/ intolerance to sugars; controlled Na diet; kidney problems. Can be used during pregnancy only if considered necessary. Breast-feeding is not recommended during treatment. Not indicated for monotherapy in childn & adolescent <16 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Nasopharyngitis; somnolence, headache. Anorexia; depression, hostility or aggression, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness or irritability; convulsion, balance disorder, dizziness, lethargy, tremor; vertigo; cough; abdominal pain, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, vomiting, nausea; rash; asthenia/fatigue.
Drug Interactions
Do not take macrogol 1 hr before or 1 hr after taking levetiracetam.
